Celebrating the life of

David Frederick Elwell

November 03, 1940 - April 29, 2024

David Frederick Elwell

David Frederick Elwell died on April 29, 2024 on Wilmington Island, Georgia at age 83.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1940, David was the son of the late John Elwell, Sr. of Boston and Margaret Kay, from Eastport Maine. David grew up in Boston's Mission Hill Housing Project. In 1983, David married Djeni Karcic in Salem, NH where they lived and had a daughter, Jessica Lee Elwell on March 25,1984.

In 1997, David founded Jessicas Brick Oven Bakery in Woburn Massachusetts. He developed it into a successful business baking and selling artisan breads all across the east coast to grocery stores and restaurants.

In 1999, while visiting family in the Boston area, Jessica was in a vehicle with friends and there was a tragic car accident which ended her young life. She loved sailing, and The Jessica Lee Elwell Scholarship Fund was established at Community Boating, Inc.

After selling Jessicas Brick Oven in 2008, David joined Djeni in Wallington, NJ, and they moved to Wilmington Island in 2017 for a warmer climate where he enjoyed living and spending time with all his friends. David will be dearly missed.

After a few years, David's general health began to deteriorate. He died at home under hospice care. He is survived by his wife, Djeni Karcic; and his older brother, John Michael Elwell, Jr.. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by half-siblings,  Frances Tripp and Charles Elwell.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel at 4605 Highway 80 East, Savannah, GA 31410.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to the Jessica Lee Elwell Scholarship Fund at https://portal.community-boating.org/donate

Mothers Day We sit in the new and elegant Thai restaurant (that used to be the Pussy Cat Lounge.) They order the hot and spicy orange beef, the lemon chicken stir-fry. Stroking their gray mustaches, they supply me with their latest news. A trip to misty Scotland,  their expensive manly watches, business in Russia in July.   They have forgotten the little boys they used to be and that dark day of dripping rain and cold and how we moved together toward the Home for Little Wanderers. Now they sit and wait for their wanton soup, sipping oolong tea, discussing the warm spring weather. Poem by David's mother Margaret Kay

- Michael Elwell, Grafton, MA
